At Sir Edmund Hillary, we want our pupils to leave our school as articulate, independent thinkers who demonstrate kindness, tolerance and respect for others. We aim for our children to have the confidence to form, express and justify their own opinions while developing an understanding of the wider world around them.
Our knowledge-rich curriculum is underpinned by the National Curriculum and carefully designed to ensure progression in knowledge and skills across all subjects. From the beginning of their educational journey, children learn to read through our chosen phonics programme, Little Wandle. Reading sits at the heart of our curriculum, and we recognise that becoming a fluent, confident reader is fundamental to success across all areas of learning. High-quality texts form the basis of our English curriculum, and a wide range of books are available to foster a love of reading. Quality texts are also used to enhance and support learning across the wider curriculum.
Our curriculum is carefully planned and sequenced to deepen children’s understanding of key concepts over time. We help children to link their new learning to previous learning, enabling them to build strong foundations of knowledge and make meaningful connections across subjects. Key concepts and knowledge end points have been identified to ensure clear progression throughout each year and across the school.
We aim to provide learning experiences that help children understand the purpose and relevance of what they are studying. Our curriculum is delivered in a way that supports children in transferring important knowledge to their long-term memory. To achieve this, we present learning clearly, encourage thoughtful discussion and regularly check children’s understanding. Where misconceptions or gaps in learning are identified, we respond promptly to ensure all children continue to make strong progress.
We recognise the importance of enriching learning through first-hand experiences. Educational visits, visitors and a wide range of enrichment opportunities help broaden children’s understanding of their local community, Nottingham and the wider world. These experiences bring learning to life and help our pupils develop curiosity, confidence and cultural awareness.
